Expect Road Closures as Students Arrive for U of G Move-In Days

The University of Guelph is gearing up for the move-in of more than 4,000 undergraduate students into campus residences this weekend.

For Immediate Release - August 31, 2021 at 8:58 AM

Following strict COVID-19 protocols, the residence move-in begins Friday, Sept. 3 and runs until Sunday, Sept. 5.

To facilitate physical distancing and traffic flow inside and outside, students have been assigned a move-in time appointment between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday to Sunday.

The following University-owned roads will be closed to all but move-in traffic:

- South Ring Road

- East Ring Road and Dundas Lane

- Macdonald Street

Gordon Street will remain open from Stone Road to College Avenue during move-in, but drivers are warned to expect heavier-than-normal traffic on Stone Road, College Avenue, University Avenue, Smith Lane and Victoria Road.

To help reduce congestion, buses will not travel onto campus during move-in.

Cyclists and pedestrians on Gordon Street are strongly advised to exercise caution at major intersections, especially South Ring Road and College Avenue.

One priority over the weekend is to efficiently welcome thousands of new students and their families while keeping major city streets surrounding the campus clear of traffic congestion. Keeping traffic moving is crucial for emergency response personnel and reduces the overall impact on city residents.

Those who are not required to be on campus are asked to avoid going to the University during this time. Those who do need to come to campus are asked to consider walking or riding a bike. Those who drive can expect higher-than-normal traffic in the afternoon, especially on roads closest to residence buildings.

Vehicles on campus should be removed from the following parking lots during move-in: P31 (University’s main entrance), P8, P9, P11 (flanking Mountain, Prairie and Maritime Halls), P16 and P18 (Dundas Lane), P19 (north side of College Ave), P20 (Lennox-Addington), P21 (Lambton Hall), P44 (Johnston Hall).

The University of Guelph offers Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees, PhD (Doctorate) degrees, diplomas and certificates, post-graduate diplomas, distance education, and co-op programs.

The University of Guelph main campus covers 330 hectares (817 acres) in the city of Guelph (an hour’s drive West of Toronto), with a mix of classic and modern architecture. It has one of the largest and best residence systems in Canada, with a variety of living options for students and 16 different dining venues. There is excellent public transportation around Guelph; the city also has many bike lanes and bike trails and cycling is supported on campus as well.

In partnership with Humber College, the University of Guelph-Humber offers additional courses through the Humber College campus in Toronto. The Ontario Agriculture College has a satellite campus, Ridgetown in southwestern Ontario offering diploma, certificate and apprenticeship programs.
