 Released For Publication - March 30, 2022

Arts and culture in Guelph have a wonderful way of bringing us  together and strengthening our community.

It is also a dynamic way to celebrate and strengthen our  local economy. For more than two years, the COVID-19 pandemic has hit cultural organizations hard.  Many are facing exceptional financial pressures as they adjusted to cancelled and virtual events.  The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund (CCSF) supports the improvement of physical conditions for arts,  heritage, culture and creative innovation. The Fund supports renovation and construction projects, the  acquisition of specialized equipment and feasibility studies related to cultural spaces. The CCSF is  supporting cultural infrastructure projects across the country. This funding provides for the  continuation of quality programing, modernizing digital presentation as well as engaging a broader  community as we begin to resume live events.

MP Longfield is pleased to announce funding has been awarded to the Guelph Youth Music Centre in  the amount of $124,000 and to the City of Guelph for the River Run Centre in the amount of $102,439.  The City of Guelph’s Live from the River Run performances focus on supporting local artists and  connecting with audiences in our community and beyond. This funding will be used by the City for the  purchase and installation of camera equipment, the purchase and installation of video switcher systems,  and video streaming capability with high-end video quality to show their productions online.

"Projects like these highlight the importance of the arts for our personal and community development by  making it safer to be there in person, or to provide more opportunities for reaching a broader audience  virtually." -  Lloyd Longfield, Member of Parliament for Guelph

The Guelph Youth Music Centre will utilize the funding to retrofit their HVAC system with five rooftop  units and six ductless heat pumps, install touchless doors, soap dispensers and taps in all five  washrooms in their facility.

"With this funding from CCSF, the Guelph Youth Music Centre (GYMC) will be positioned to ensure our  facility is a safe and healthy environment for everyone who works and plays here. The pandemic has  been a most challenging time for the GYMC, as it has for many non-profits who have been unable to  fully carry out their mission. We are very grateful to the Government of Canada for supporting us as we  move forward stronger than ever. We couldn't do it without you!"   -Gabriella Currie-Ziegler, Executive Director-Guelph Youth Music Centre

Guelph Youth Music Centre is a not for profit performing arts facility operator and arts presenter based  in Guelph that has been in operation since 1981, formally incorporated in 1992, and in its current  building since 1995.

River Run Centre presents professional arts productions in the City of Guelph's downtown core and  benefits the community and surrounding area by providing a premier stage for concerts, musicals, plays,  dance performances, family shows, and much more. The facility engages hundreds of community  volunteers each year and hosts several school groups and dance competitions, continually offering a  safe and accessible space for education and engagement.

“This funding will help River Run Centre produce shows that highlight local artists, build connections  with audiences, and bring us together the way only live performances can. On behalf of Council, thank  you to the Government of Canada for this investment in the safe reopening of our much-loved cultural  spaces.”  Cam Guthrie, Mayor of Guelph

Federal Budget 2021 included an additional $15 million for one year to the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund  for Making Cultural Spaces Safe During COVID 19. The funds are disbursed in 2021–2022, and support  projects with a clear and specific focus on the safe re-opening of cultural spaces. By enabling arts and  heritage organizations to implement the changes necessary to ensure safe and secure spaces, the  Canada Cultural Spaces Fund can help promote public confidence to return to cultural attendance and  activity.
