The human race is still on. But are we still winning?

The future of artificial intelligence plays out in ‘Marjorie Prime’

Released For Publication - October 11, 2022

The Downtown Theatre Project (DTP) is back onstage with a play that promises to bend the brain and strum at the heartstrings.

This time, the acclaimed sci-fi drama MARJORIE PRIME offers a thoughtful tale of artificial intelligence and its impact on a family, 30 years in the future.

Chosen as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama (2015), the play will be performed live on stage October 19-23 at the Red Brick Café in downtown Guelph.

Writer Jordan Harrison (Orange is the New Black) has conjured an insightful story that explores the boundaries of human identity and the influence of technology on our lives and memories. DTP director Trevor Smith Diggins says the play is intense on many levels, but also there’s “a bit of suspense, some sci-fi moments, and maybe even a few laughs along the way.”

“We can only imagine what Siri, Alexa, and their friends will be capable of doing three decades from now,” says Smith Diggins. “Here, we get a glimpse at what that might look like, when the technology gets even smarter and begins to download our identities.”

On casting the show, Smith Diggins says it’s “a match made in virtual heaven” with local actors Jen Barson, Trevor Middleton, Marnie Jutzi, and Carlo Adamo. Guelph artist Barbara Bryce designed the set for the production.

MARJORIE PRIME runs October 19-23 at The Red Brick Cafe, 8 Douglas St. in Guelph for five performances.

Show times are Wednesday through Sunday at 8:00 pm.
Doors open 30 minutes before showtime.
Seating is limited.
Tickets are $30 on Eventbrite.ca

Since 2018, the Downtown Theatre Projecthas pushed the performing arts in new and more intimate directions, offering live theatre in downtown Guelph venues. This production is rated M for mature themes. Visit the DTP website for content warnings and ticket information.
