Newcomer Ukrainians Will Join In Leading The Guelph Community Santa Parade

Released For Publication: November 9, 2022

The holiday cheer is now before us and with that the anticipation of the Guelph Community Santa Claus Parade.

The 2022 Guelph Community Santa Parade
Sunday November 20th
Location: Downtown Guelph
Admission: Free

Start the excitement-filled afternoon with the Santa Road Race, organized by the Speed River Track & Field Club. At 1pm runners will don a red and white Santa suit and run 3KM on the parade route. All proceeds from the run will support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph

Registration stays open until the big race day.  So set up early, grab a hot beverage from a Downtown business, cheer on the runners and enjoy the show!

Be ready at 1:15pm with those letters to Santa and non-perishable items as Canada Post and the Guelph Food Bank will kick off the show.  The holiday fun begins at 1.30pm from Woolwich Street at Powell Street, ending on Wyndham Street at the railway bridge.  See the parade route map here

This year a group of newcomer Ukrainians, supported by members of the Ukrainian church community and Stand-with-Ukraine committee, will join in leading the Guelph Community Santa Parade.

A spokesperson for the group said “participation in the parade is a good opportunity to express gratitude and be part of the community as well as another chance to remind people that Ukraine needs continued support. The war rages on with no end in sight as Ukraine’s infrastructure and residential areas are bombed. As winter approaches, many people are finding themselves without water, heat and electricity. Christmas lights will be sparse with blackouts aimed at conserving energy, but the resolve of Ukrainians continues despite the hardships and grief. For those Ukrainians who have taken shelter in Guelph and area, our message of gratitude is as heartfelt as the outpouring of support from the Guelph community.”

Spectators can also expect to see ballet-dancing hippos,  a festive excavator, and three of Guelph’s dance schools. One of these schools, Connections Dance Collective, are appearing in the parade for the very first time.

Owner Kelsey Allen says “participating in the parade is a team bonding experience for our studio. Our students love the camaraderie that comes with preparing for the parade, from the in-studio rehearsals to the float decorating party and everything in between. It's also extra special for us to be able to share our love of dance with our community, especially after so many years without this experience. We are beyond excited to get out on the streets and share our joy with everyone!”

This event would not be possible without our many sponsors, volunteers and supporters.

Particular thanks goes to Floatr, a transportation company who have kindly donated 4 trucks and flatbeds to participants in this year's parade.

The Guelph Community Santa Parade is organized by the Downtown Guelph Business Association.  Over 100 volunteers help the day run safely and smoothly, and over 1,000 participants make us all happy with their colourful costumes and Christmas wishes.
