Ontario Greens’ leader and MPP for Guelph Mike Schreiner released the following statement in response to news that several water bombers remain grounded due to insufficient funding while wildfires rage.
“It’s only June, and wildfires across Ontario have already forced hundreds from their homes, caused devastating damage and negatively affected people’s health from toxic air pollution.
Meanwhile, water bombers that could help fight these fires are sitting unused in airport hangars because there aren’t enough pilots to fly them.
Why? The Ford government refuses to invest in fair wages and working conditions for these highly skilled workers. Bomber pilots are leaving Ontario for jobs that pay a livable wage, while communities here are left vulnerable.
The Ontario Greens are calling on the Ford government to step up: invest in better pay, restore full-time positions, and ensure we’re prepared to face wildfire season with a strong, supported frontline workforce.”
