The first month in Ottawa for Dominique O’Rourke, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Guelph, began May 23 with her swearing in and orientation sessions.
In addition to joining the Prime Minister’s Economic Growth caucus, MP O’Rourke was appointed to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Industry and Technology (INDU), a key committee that studies legislation and government activity related to innovation, economic development, scientific research, AI as well as telecommunications, and the effective operation of Canada’s marketplace.
“I am honoured to join the Industry Committee at such a pivotal time for our local and national economy,”
said MP O’Rourke
. “With businesses navigating rapid technological change and Canada striving to boost productivity and competitiveness, this committee’s work is more relevant than ever. Working with colleagues from all parties, we have the opportunity to shape policies that support innovation, strengthen industries, and create opportunities for workers and entrepreneurs across the country.”
MP O’Rourke’s first month in Parliament has already been a productive one.
In her inaugural remarks on the Speech from the Throne she highlighted how “Guelph residents and businesses have the skills and determination to face these unprecedented challenges and to seize this opportunity”and reiterated how “Protecting jobs, supporting workers and building the strongest economy in the G7 is the single most important thing this government can do to help the 16,500 people in Guelph ~ that’s one in 5 homes ~ who are directly employed in advanced manufacturing and the thousands more who work in related fields.”
She joined the Prime Minister’s Economic Growth caucus, the national and Ontario caucuses, the women’s caucus and now chairs the Southwestern Ontario Caucus where, again, the issues of tariffs and trade are front and centee.
MP O’Rourke supported the government’s early actions, including a tax cut for middle class families, the elimination of the GST for first-time homebuyers, historic funding of Canada’s military and the passage of the One Canadian Economy Act, historic legislation aimed at removing federal interprovincial trade barriers, accelerating nation-building infrastructure projects -including clean energy, and fostering economic reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.
“I’m proud to support legislation that makes life more affordable and that helps Guelph thrive as part of a stronger, more connected Canadian economy,” she says.
These initiatives reflect the government’s bold mandate to “build big, build bold, and build now,” and MP O’Rourke is committed to ensuring Guelph’s voice is heard in shaping Canada’s economic future.
In addition to the work in Ottawa, MP O’Rourke was also busy re-establishing the constituency office in Guelph and hiring staff in both locations.
Both offices are now fully functional and ready to help constituents:
