Guelph Chamber Choir's African Sanctus
Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 7:30 pm at the River Run Centre

The first concert of Guelph Chamber Choir's new season is David Fanshawe's African Sanctus!

Guelph Chamber Choir's African Sanctus with Special Guests Gary Diggins & Co

Conductor, Gerald Neufeld, Guest Artists: Gary Diggins, percussionist, and, Sheila Dietrich, Soprano

David Fanshawe’s exciting blend of traditional African and European music in his African Sanctus opens the Guelph Chamber Choir’s 2016 – 2017 concert series. Fanshawe recorded music on his journey through the African continent; music that moves from the Islamic call to worship in Egypt to plaintive chants in the rain in Uganda to driving rhythms in Kenya. He wedded that music to the words and music of the Christian Mass in an astonishing combination of African music with music in the Western tradition. African Sanctus will be performed by the Guelph Chamber Choir, accompanied by a guitars, percussion and piano, together with Sheila Dietrich who has shown her amazing versatility as a soprano soloists over the past three years with the GCC.

In the first half of the concert, Guelph’s very own Gary Diggins will bring his astonishing collection of African instruments along with his expertise and performance skill with them to our audience through a series of “post cards” in which he will explore music from four different African countries together with the choir and his friends who sing (Ondine Chorus), with solos from members Sue Smith, Tannis Slimmon and Shannon Kingsbury) and play percussion and other instruments. Gary is a master at using traditional instruments to bring new music, much of it improvised, to our listeners.
