Repair Café Guelph - Sat Mar 25

Repair Café Guelph invites everyone to its next event where volunteer fixers will help to repair household items, electronics, computers, clothing, etc

This is a free event taking place on Saturday March 25 from 11 am until 3 pm at St George's Anglican Church (99 Woolwich St., Guelph).

Participants have a chance to learn how to fix their broken items with guidance from our experienced fixers.

At the Repair Café Guelph’s event everything centers on making repairs. Starting at 11 am on Saturday March 25 and running until 3 pm at The Mitchell Hall of St George's Anglican Church on 99 Woolwich St. in Guelph, volunteer repair fixers will be available to make repairs free of charge. People attending the Repair Café bring their broken items from home to be repaired and to learn new skills. Toasters, lamps, coffee machines, hair dryers, computers, clothing, toys, electronics, etc. This time we will also have volunteers who will help with fixing clocks and sharpening knives! Anything that is broken is welcome.

By promoting repairs, Repair Café Guelph wants to help reduce the amount of waste going into the landfill. This is absolutely necessary, according to Repair Café Guelph Coordinator Saba Saneinejad. "We throw away piles of stuff in Guelph. Even things that are almost new which could easily be used again after a simple repair. Repair Café Guelph wants to help change that."

This Repair Café will have 10 fixers on hand with expertise in fixing electronics, electrical appliances, computers, clocks, knives, clothing, jewelry and toys. Working with the fixers is done on a first come first served basis. Repair Café Coordinator Saba Saneinejad said “We hope to serve between 60 and 80 people depending on the types and complexity of the repairs.”

This is the fourth Repair Café event in Guelph and they are organized roughly every two months throughout the city. The Repair Café Guelph is run by the Guelph Tool Library, a project of Transition Guelph. The Guelph Tool Library opened its doors in August of 2016 and for a low cost membership allows anyone to borrow from a selection of tools to carry out home improvements, gardening, and food preparation and preservation. Tool Library Coordinator John Dennis said “the Repair Café idea was a perfect match for what we are doing with the Guelph Tool Library. All our tools are donated and many need small repairs. So the idea of taking the skills we have learned and recruiting additional fixers to run a Repair Café made perfect sense.”

This Repair Café is part of the Resilience Festival and is sponsored through a number of local partners and organizations. The Meridian Credit Union has assisted us through a Community Grant which helps us with material costs and advertising. The Repair Café Guelph is most grateful to its volunteer fixers who work for free because they enjoy helping people and are up for the challenge of fixing many different items.

Repair Café Guelph Coordinator Saba Saneinejad points out that repairs can save money and resources, and can help minimize CO2 emissions. “But above all, Repair Café Guelph wants to show how much fun and rewarding repairing things can be.”

** Background Information **

Repair Café Guelph and Guelph Tool Library
The Repair Café concept arose in the Netherlands in 2009 and has spread throughout the world (see www.Repaircafe.org). The Guelph Repair Café began as an outreach project of the Guelph Tool Library.

Both projects began in 2016 with the goal of reducing waste and giving people the tools to be more creative and productive. See www.guelphtoollibrary.org for more information and contact us at info@guelphtoollibrary.org

Transition Guelph
Transition Guelph is a group of citizens coming together as volunteers to promote processes and projects for strengthening community resilience and economic vitality. Each project associated with Transition Guelph is initiated by an interested community member, and grows according to local needs and resources. Our goal is to create a richer, more vibrant community through the re-localization of the services and resources that we need in order to survive and thrive in a world of long-term energy cost increases, climate change, and growing instability in the world economy. See www.transitionguelph.org for more information.
