FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Syrup in the City will take place on Saturday April 1st from 10am to 1pm.

Students from John McCrae Public School and the Grade 12 Upper Grand District Outdoor Education Program (Headwaters) are presenting a fun day of games, food and maple syrup!  The Urban Sugaring Project  is a also a partner in this event.
This is a fun, free, family friendly event taking place at John McCrae Public School, 189 Water Street.  Katie Gad,  Headwaters Teacher, said "Syrup in the City is a celebration of the natural spaces we have in the city and is a wonderful way for students to show leadership in their community by facilitating a festival that celebrates nature."

Visitors can take a turn at tree tapping, watch a sap boiling demonstration, try pioneer log sawing, taste some sap and syrup, watch a puppet show, and play animal hide & seek bingo.  Students from John McRae Public School will be cooking up a pancake breakfast for visitors with the goal of raising funds for the school. There will also be local maple syrup and maple treats for sale.

Urban Sugaring Project Coordinator John Dennis said "It will be a fun celebration of all things maple and takes place in the unique setting of an urban forest on the school property."

The event is free but donations are gladly accepted.  For more information visit the John McRae Public School Website http://www.ugdsb.ca/jmc/.

** Background Information **

École John McCrae Public School

École John McCrae Public School  is a K to 8 French Immersion School located at 189 Water Street and just south of the Speed River in Guelph.  Our 640 Kindergarten to grade 8 students are housed in a beautiful seven year old building surrounded by a park-like setting of maple trees.

Headwaters Program

The Headwaters Program is the grade twelve outdoor education program offered by the Upped Grand District School Board.  It is a four-credit interdisciplinary program facilitated by Centennial Collegiate and open to all students in the Upper Grand District School Board.

The Urban Sugaring Project

The Urban Sugaring Project is presented by Transition Guelph and allows tree owners in the City of Guelph to work together to create maple syrup.

Tree owners rent a kit (a bucket, tree tap, and instructions) for $10 and return the collected sap to a central location. The sap will be collected and boiled down by volunteers to syrup and redistributed back to the participants.  In 2017 over 60 people participated in the program with over 100 trees tapped in and around Guelph.
