Handel’s Messiah Sat Dec 23rd!

Guelph Chamber Choir presents a beautiful period performance of Handel’s Messiah just two nights before Christmas

The Guelph Chamber Choir i
nvites the community to join us for our annual performance of Handel’s Messiah on Saturday, December 23, 2017 at 7:30 pm featuring Musica Viva Orchestra with spirited musicians playing on period instruments and four outstanding Canadian soloists.

Handel’s Messiah has become a treasured Christmas tradition for many in the English-speaking world.  Conductor Gerald Neufeld remarked, “As I approach my last performance of Messiah with the Guelph Chamber Choir, I am grateful for the many times that we have been privileged to perform a work of such artistry and beauty together with world-class soloists and musicians.  Each year, we work to approach this masterpiece with renewed insights, allowing the beauty and brilliance of the music to declaim the familiar story.”

The choir is pleased to welcome back Canadian soprano Meredith Hall who delights audiences internationally with her “lustrous sound and fluent legato with bravura musical performance matched by a riveting sense of the dramatic.”  She has performed with the Toronto Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Les Musiciens du Louvre, and Tafelmusik.

Sony Classical artist, Daniel Taylor is one of the most sought-after countertenors in the world today and we are fortunate that having heard of the GCC’s sensitive period performance practice, he waived his normal fees to join us this Christmas.  Beyond being one of Canada’s most prolific performers and recording artists, he has recently been appointed by the University of Toronto as Head of Historical Performance in the Faculty of Music and is Artistic Director and Conductor of the choir and orchestra of the world-renown Theatre of Early Music.

Both tenor Neal Banerjee and baritone Alexander Dobson studied with Gerald Neufeld at the Western University before launching celebrated international careers in both opera and recital.  Neal’s “bright, lively tenor” and Alexander’s “rich, flexible baritone” will round out a dream quartet of world-class singers.

Our new Christmas recording, Carols of the Bells, featuring the Guelph Chamber Choir and Bells Ablaze, will be available for $20 to take home and to give to friends and relatives as great last-minute gifts.
