Guelph Student Walkout Sept 21st

High school students walkout September 21st and gather at City Hall in protest of sex-ed and Indigenous education rollback

For immediate release: September 13th 2018 GUELPH

On Friday September 21st students in Guelph from High Schools including (but not limited to) GCVI, John F Ross, Centennial, St. James, Lourdes, and Bishop Mac will be walking out of their classrooms at 1pm and will be gathering at City Hall until 3pm.

The Guelph Student Walkout is an act of peaceful protest against Doug Ford's rollback of the Sex-Ed (Health and Physical Education) and Indigenous curriculum. We are coming together to stand for inclusion, respect, and truth for all students, parents, and faculty across Ontario.

At 1pm, students from each school will walk out of their classrooms and move as a mass to Guelph City Hall (1 Carden Street) arriving between 1:30-2pm. Once all schools are gathered at City Hall, there will be a period of time allotted for speakers to share their thoughts, petitions to sign, and a jar to collect donations. Community members are invited to meet students at City Hall at around 1:30pm.

Student leaders and spokespeople from each school will be wearing tie-dye t-shirts and we ask that you specifically speak to these student leaders on the day of the event if you choose to cover the walkout and/or interview a participant.

For more information, please refer to our Facebook event at Guelph Walkout 2018 and the Instagram page @guelphwalkout2018

"Sex Ed saves lives. Indigenous studies are mandatory studies. We the students do not consent."

Two updates to note:

a) College Heights will also be participating

b) We received this statement from the school board:

The Upper Grand DSB strongly supports student voice.  This includes students expressing their viewpoint in a peaceful manner that does not include the destruction of property, the exposure of students and others to risks involving health and safety, and does not hinder the operation of our schools. We recognize that some Upper Grand students may choose to participate in the province-wide walkouts. All school administrators will follow age-appropriate procedures to monitor the situation and safety of our students, while respecting their desire to express their opinion.”
