Local Poet Honoured
Guelph Spoken Word is excited to announce that: Local Poet Is Honoured at the National Spoken Word Festival - Coming to Guelph October 28 to November 3!

The Canadian Festival of Spoken Word (CFSW), a national, nomadic, annual spoken word festival, held in a different community each year (from Vancouver, to Saskatoon to Halifax ), will be hosted for 2018 here in Guelph from Sunday October 28 to Saturday November 3.

Each year, two spoken word artists in Canada receive the Poet of Honour award in this festival.

This year, Guelph poet “Truth Is …” (pictured above) joins the ranks of acclaimed artists George Elliott Clarke, Lillian Allen, Shanye Koyczan, C.R. Avery and D’bi Young who, among others have been honoured with the title.  It is given to poets who have made a significant contribution to the artform of spoken word poetry through creation of art and community-organizing.

On Saturday November 3rd, Truth Is … will receive the award and perform a set at the River Run Centre alongside Shayne-avec-I-Grec from Victoria who is also a recipient. This finale event is the culminating showcase of the festival.

The festival includes Spoken Word Poetry performances, workshops, open mics and a poetry slam tournament with 15+ slam teams competing from across Canada. Also included in the River Run performance is the slam finals competition with the top four slam teams from the preliminary bouts of slam competition, slamming for the title. What is slam? An interactive spoken word competition where the audience picks the winning poet. Picture boxing match meets rap battle meets theatre performance. Tickets are on sale now for $25.00

In celebration of their 10 year anniversary in November, local arts organization Guelph Spoken Word put a bid in to host the festival this year. “After sending a Guelph slam team to participate in this festival for the past 8 years, it has always been a dream to bring CFSW to Guelph” says founder, Beth Anne Fischer. “Magic, profound epiphanies and lasting connections happen at this festival. I am so excited to share this experience with my hometown Guelph.”

Speaking of anniversaries the festival itself is celebrating a birthaversary this fall… turning 15 years old. There is much to celebrate!
