Education & Mental Health Week
May 6 to May 10 - Upper Grand schools celebrate Education & Mental Health Week

For Immediate Release April 23, 2019

GUELPH, Ontario – This May, the Upper Grand District School Board is highlighting the importance of mental wellness to education by celebrating Education Week and Child and Youth Mental Health Week together.

The Ministry of Education has designated the week of May 6 to May 10 as Education Week – a time to “celebrate our accomplishments and reflect on new and exciting challenges ahead.” In the UGDSB, this week has been extended from mid-April to mid-May to allow schools the flexibility to plan events and activities to encourage the participation of as many parents, staff, students and community members as possible.

The theme for UGDSB’s Education Week is “Creating Our Future Together/ Créons notre avenir ensemble.”

On Monday May 6, the UGDSB will celebrate the official opening of Education Week at a celebration held at Centre Wellington District High School in Fergus. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with refreshments and displays from J.D. Hogarth, John Black and Elora public schools, and of course Centre Wellington DHS. The formal part of the evening will start at 7:00 p.m. The school is located at 905 Scotland Street in Fergus.

The public is invited to attend.

During the UGDSB’s Education Week celebrations, both parents and the general public have many opportunities to witness the quality of work produced by students. There are a host of activities that showcase the excellence in schools, including open houses, science fairs, exhibits of literary and artistic work, band and choir concerts, and operettas.

New this year, all Upper Grand schools will celebrate Education Week and Child and Youth Mental Health and Well-being Week at the same time. Schools will receive resources to support school- based activities that promote mental wellness, increase awareness about child and youth mental health, decrease stigma, and understand that support is available.

The Upper Grand DSB encourages everyone to take a few minutes and visit a neighbourhood school to observe the many accomplishments of students and staff. Check your school’s website or contact your local school for more details ...and come celebrate Education & Mental Health Week!
