Skoufis began the qualification process as a Team Ontario member with the provincial championships held in April. The top 8 from each province qualified for the Canadian Championships.
The top 4 competitors at the Canadian Championships became members of Team Canada. The event drew top martial artists throughout the nation and included martial arts stylist representing Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, Kickboxing, Kung Fu and many more.
The event was held in Ottawa this past weekend. On Friday Skoufis was weighed in, on Saturday the first round was held and Sunday the second round was held. At the end of the second round the Canadian Team is selected. A gruelling physically and mentally demanding weekend.
Skoufis had also been invited to qualify for Team Greece but selected instead to enter qualifications for Team Canada.
Skoufis says “It is an honour and truly humbling to have qualified as a member of Team Canada. It is surreal to be able to represent this amazing country on the international stage and is something I am looking forward to. This country is so amazing and has presented many opportunities to me and my family. We truly live in the world’s greatest countries, so happy to call Canada home. I hope my qualification will be motivating to our entire community that whatever goal you have pursue it and stay dedicated and you can achieve it. My martial arts journey was not always easy, as a child I wanted to give up because it was difficult. I learned that when something is difficult not to give up but to overcome that obstacle doing whatever it takes.
Thank you everyone for your support and encouragement over the years throughout my martial arts journey. I am so proud to wear the Maple Leaf in the upcoming world championships and look forward to what the future will bring”.
