July 18th Game Summary
Guelph Nighthawks vs. Saskatchewan Rattlers

Staff Writer, Cameron Burgess - July 22, 2019

The Guelph Nighthawks beat the Saskatchewan Rattlers 93-75 on Thursday night, marking the first win under new head coach Charles Kissi.

The Nighthawks started out on fire, scoring the first 14 points of the game on their way to building a 21-lead in the opening quarter. Connor Wood was impressive early on, scoring nine points in the first quarter all from three-point range. Saskatchewan battled back in the final minutes by scoring 12 unanswered points, but still trailed 26-17.

The second quarter was more evenly matched, but Guelph still held a slight edge throughout. The Nighthawks continued their impressive shooting from three-point range, connecting on four more attempts in the quarter. Negus Webster-Chan got the Rattlers within single digits, but newcomer Kimbal Mackenzie gave the Nighthawks a 44-34 lead in the final seconds before halftime.

Guelph controlled the early part of the third quarter and began to pull away on the scoreboard. A layup by Meshack Lufile extended the lead to 18 points with 3:40 left in the quarter, but Saskatchewan began to rally back in the dying minutes of the quarter. While the Rattlers were making shots, they also held the Nighthawks scoreless after that layup from Lufile.

Guelph continued to put pressure on the Rattlers in the fourth quarter as they looked to secure the win. With Saskatchewan in need of a comeback, it was the Nighthawks who controlled the pace of play. Wood and Mackenzie continued to lead the charge for Guelph, with Wood setting a CEBL record with nine made three-pointers in the game. A strong finish meant that the Nighthawks would come away with a comfortable win.

Connor Wood was named Player of the Game for the Nighthawks for his record-setting performance, finishing with 29 points, five rebounds and 3 assists. Kimbal Mackenzie was second on the team in scoring with 19 points, while Olu Famutimi finished with 14.

Negus Webster-Chan was the best player for the Rattlers, leading the team with 19 points and also recording three assists.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Nighthawks, keeping their hopes for a playoff appearance alive.
