July 27th Game Summary
Guelph Nighthawks vs. Niagara River Lions

Staff Writer, Cameron Burgess - July 30, 2019

With the regular season winding down, the Guelph Nighthawks were looking to end things on a positive note. However, the league-leading Niagara River Lions proved to be too much of a challenge, defeating the Nighthawks by a score of 96-87.

Both teams found offense from behind the three-point line early on, as Connor Wood and Nem Mitrovic exchanged shots to start the game. The River Lions began to dominate the paint after that, putting together a 22-13 lead after the opening quarter.

Trailing on the scoreboard, the Nighthawks looked to claw their way back into the game with their three-point shooting. It seemed that the River Lions had an answer for every Guelph basket, preventing the Nighthawks from building any momentum. The River Lions were up 46-38 at halftime, with Alex Johnson leading the way with 15 points.

Any momentum that the Nighthawks had was lost over the break. The River Lions continued to make shots and increase their lead, while Guelph struggled to score.  One bright spot in the third quarter was Johneil Simpson’s first basket as a member of the Nighthawks.

Joel Kindred had the hometown crowd at the Sleeman Centre excited early in the fourth quarter with a huge dunk over a defender. It looked like it would be a turning point for the Nighthawks, igniting yet another comeback attempt. Guelph would get within five points in the final minutes, but that was as close as they would get to catching the River Lions.

Olu Famutimi was named Player of the Game for the Nighthawks, finishing with 20 points including 12 from three-point range. Kimbal Mackenzie also had 20 points for Guelph, and he also added six assists and four rebounds.

Alex Johnson and Dorian Pinson both finished with 19 points for the River Lions, with Pinson also leading Niagara with 11 rebounds.

The Nighthawks won’t have to wait long for a rematch, as they travel to Niagara to face the River Lions again on August 1 at 7:00 P.M.

The Guelph Nighthawk is a nocturnal species, taking off at the crest of nightfall from its nest in the conservation lands, gliding smoothly and gracefully through the air before swooping in upon its prey at the Sleeman Centre.
