Urban Sugaring Project

The Urban Sugaring Project returns with a pancake breakfast and the distribution of kits on Saturday February 1, 2020 from 9:00 to 11:30 am

For Immediate Release - Friday January 17, 2020

The Urban Sugaring Project allows tree owners to tap their trees and work together to make maple syrup.  The pancake breakfast is free and sponsored by the Church of the Apostles (86 Glasgow Street North).

After a year hiatus, the Urban Sugaring Project returns to Guelph.  The project is now run by the Guelph Tool Library and expanded to tap over 150 trees.  Project Coordinator John Dennis said “the Guelph Tool Library was a natural fit for this project.  Like the Tool Library, the Urban Sugaring Project provides tools and knowledge to those in Guelph that want to try something new!”

Participants rent a kit (a bucket, tree tap, and instructions) for $10 (with a $10 deposit) and return the collected sap to a central location. The sap is pooled and boiled down by volunteers to syrup and redistributed back to the participants. Participants receive a share of the finished syrup based on how much sap they contributed.

Changes to the program this year include an additional pick up location at the Guelph Tool Library, a pre-launch sign up for Tool Library members, and maple syrup making equipment available for loan from the Tool Library.  Project Coordinator John Dennis said “we will have half of the kits available for the pre-launch sign up for Tool Library members”.

Distribution of the kits will occur on Saturday February 1 at the free pancake breakfast. Volunteers will be available to answer questions about tapping trees and the project.   The breakfast will include fresh pancakes, including gluten free and vegan options, and syrup made from the trees at John McCrae Public School.   The Reverend Naomi Miller , said “Pancakes are the perfect vehicle for enjoying maple syrup- and they are both such joyful signs of spring, and of the great goodness of the world God made.”
