Awarded Ontario Trillium Foundation Seed Grant

Guelph Tool Library to offer a full year of programming with a focus on sustainable living and waste reduction

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 21st, 2018

This September the Guelph Tool Library received some big news. The community organization has been awarded a Seed Grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Seed Grants are awarded to non-profit organizations to support projects or ideas in their conceptual stage that support one of six priority outcomes. These grants award funding to cover project costs for up to one year.

The Guelph Tool Library has been granted an Ontario Trillium Foundation Seed Grant. This is exciting news for the Guelph Tool Library, an initiative that started in August 2016 under the Urban Food Working Group of Transition Guelph. Since its inception, the Guelph Tool Library has grown to over 200 members, built an inventory of over 500 specialized tools, and hosts bi-monthly Repair Cafes that divert thousands of pounds of household items from local landfills. With this OTF grant, the organization will offer monthly programming over the next year with a focus on waste reduction and sustainable practices.

These workshops will range from hands on activities like furniture refinishing and clothing repair, to round-table discussions about alternative housing solutions, and waste management at all levels. In an effort to keep these workshops affordably priced, sliding-scale rates will be offered, with some free sessions available. At least half of the workshops will be offered offsite in fully accessible spaces throughout the city of Guelph.

The program coordinator, Steph Clarke, is looking forward to seeing new and old faces around the tool library. Steph was the tool library manager from December 2017 to April of this year, as part of the Job Creation Partnership program. She is excited to return with a focus on creating exciting programs that engage her community:

“At the tool library, everything is about sharing. We share ideas, skills, and tools to connect and strengthen our community. Being a part of that is really special. Helping the tool library grow during my first work term was so rewarding. The next year is set to be a very thrilling learning experience for me and for my community"

The Guelph Tool Library plans to close out their grant-year with a zero-waste symposium in the summer of 2019. The event will feature speakers, workshops, and programs all from a zero-waste perspective.
