Stage 4 Excavation Project

Archaeological Fieldwork Begins at Wellington Place

For Immediate Release - June 10, 2020

Archaeological Fieldwork Begins at Wellington Place

A Stage 4 archaeological excavation is being conducted by the Archaeological Research Associates (ARA) on behalf of the County on the grounds of Wellington Place. The fieldwork will take place on a small plot of land that was formerly the McLeister farmhouse site, located near the roundabout.  This important work is a continuation of the archaeological assessments completed in 2009.  The fieldwork is expected to take approximately two weeks to complete.

“In 2009, archaeological assessments were completed on the County lands at Wellington Place in advance of development,” said Janice Hindley, Wellington Place Administrator.  “A Stage 3 assessment identified one small piece of land Find spot 1 as an area requiring further research and a Stage 4 excavation and mitigation.  A Stage 4 excavation is archaeological work done to mitigate development impacts.”

During the Stage 3 site work, artifacts from the Euro-Canadian period, dating from between the 1830s and 1960s, were discovered and have now become part of the Wellington County Museum’s collection. Watch for a future exhibit at the Museum on the history of the site following the Stage 4 excavation project.

“First Nations, including the Six Nations of the Grand River; the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations; and, the Haudenosaunee have been informed about the project and invited to participate” said Hindley.

The Project has three objectives:

To document the archaeological context, cultural features and artifacts for all parts of the archaeological site.

To document the removal of the archaeological site.

To preserve the information about the archaeological site for future study.

The Stage 4 excavation strategy will include the relocation of the permanent datum established during the Stage 3 assessment:

The re-establishment of the grid based on this datum.

The documentation of all field conditions.

Mechanical topsoil removal (MTR) of the site extent and 10 m beyond any cultural features shovel shining.

Feature excavation.
