Guelph receives federal funding to improve food security in the community

For Immediate Release October 30, 2020

Food banks and other local food organizations across Canada are facing an increased  demand for their services and added pressure from shortages in donations and volunteers.  Now more than ever, they need continued support to offer the crucial services Canadians  rely upon to feel safe and healthy.

Today, Lloyd Longfield, Member of Parliament for Guelph, hosted a virtual press conference where he announced $321,079.33 from the Government of Canada to improve food security  for Guelph residents facing social, economic and health impacts of the COVID-19  pandemic.

“With this emergency funding, our local service providers have done an outstanding job  stepping up to support those who need it most during COVID-19. The demand has been  heightened in these challenging times and I thank our community agencies and volunteers  for the collaborative work they do to ensure all who need safe affordable food have access  to it. The Government of Canada will continue with providing support until we are at the  other side of this pandemic.” -Lloyd Longfield, Member of Parliament for Guelph

The funds were distributed between The Guelph Food Bank, HOPE House, Guelph  Community Health-the SEED, Salvation Army Guelph Community and Family Services,  Ontario Student Nutrition Services-Crown Dairy, Wyndham House, Children’s Foundation of  Guelph and Wellington-Food and Friends Program, Grange Hill East Neighbourhood Group  and Church of the Apostle-St. James and St. Matthias and will be used to purchase  equipment, implement safety measures as well as purchase and distribute food in our  community.

This funding is part of the $100 million Emergency Fund for food security announced by  Prime Minister Trudeau in April to position food banks and local food organizations early in  the pandemic to respond to increased community needs. On October 9, the Prime Minister  announced an additional $100 million to help ensure that communities and organizations  can continue to respond to increased demands.

Key national food security organizations have been instrumental in distributing this funding,  including Food Banks Canada, Community Food Centres Canada, Second Harvest,  Salvation Army, Breakfast Club of Canada.
More than 1,800 food banks and local food organizations across Canada have been helped  by the funds from the Prime Minister’s announcement, which is estimated will help serve  over 2 million Canadians with 6 million meals.

“Local food organizations are working tirelessly to help Canadians put food on their tables, and  now more than ever they need our support. The funding announced today will help these  organizations in the Guelph area to make sure people across their communities have access to  food so they can continue to cope as they face other challenges.” - Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food
