Mental Health Advocacy Recognized

Mike Schreiner recognized Guelph resident and mental health advocate, Noah Irvine, in the Ontario Legislature today during a Member Statement

OCTOBER 3, 2018, QUEEN’S PARK

Mike Schreiner recognized Guelph resident and mental health advocate, Noah Irvine, in the Ontario Legislature today during a Member Statement. Below is the transcript of what he said:

I am honoured to rise today to thank one of the strongest advocates for action on mental health issues I’ve ever met.

Today I attended a press conference hosted by the Member for Nickelbelt where Noah Irvine challenged every member in this house to put partisanship aside to address the lack of action on mental health and addictions issues.

My constituency of Guelph has seen a 50% increase in the number of emergency room admissions for mental health and addictions issues.

Across Ontario we have seen a 54% increase in emergency department visits for children and youth seeking treatment for mental-health issues. Over 12,000 of these children sit on a mental health waiting list.

Noah challenged everyone in this House to support the recommendations of the select committee on Mental Health and Addictions. Eight years later it is time to act.

Noah’s campaign reminds us that it is urgent to build comprehensive and fully funded mental health strategy. Thank you Noah for your advocacy."
