Reverend Miller is the second minister in charge of the newly formed Church of the Apostles.
A service of "Celebration of New Partnerships in Ministry" is planned for November 17th with a service and community meal beginning at 4:00 pm. All are welcome. Church of the Apostles is a safe place for all people to worship regardless of race, creed, age, cultural background or sexual orientation.
Starting in September, Reverend Miller became the Rector of the Church of the Apostles. Reverend Miller received her Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Guelph and her Masters of Divinity degree from Trinity College in Toronto. Reverend Miller was ordained Deacon in May of 1999, and Priest in April, 2000, in the Anglican Dioceses of Toronto. Most recently, Reverend Miller ministered at the Church of the Evangelists in New Tecumseth.
Reverend Miller said that “for years, my husband had been commuting to work at the University of Guelph, and we knew that the cost- in lost family time, in stress, and in our carbon footprint could not be sustained. That's why I started asking about vacancies in the Diocese of Niagara. And when I looked, I found this church, right in the city of Guelph, was looking for a new minister. I learned about the passionate volunteers who were working on a school breakfast program, poverty reduction, refugee family sponsorship, beautiful worship, with excellence in their music program, and openly proclaiming itself as affirming of same-sex couples... and the more I found out about the Church of the Apostles the more sure I was that this would be the right move for me, and for my family.”
The Church of the Apostles, located at the corner of Paisley Rd. and Glasgow St. N., is the amalgamation of two congregations, St. Matthias Anglican Church and St. James the Apostle Anglican Church. On September 5, 2017, the unique identity of each church entered a covenantal agreement that brought the two parishes together to create a new congregation with new ways of being Church and with the intent of celebrating the best of the two histories.
Reverend Miller related that “scripture is full of stories about how God gives people a new name, to go along with a new direction or a new mission. This is a challenging, exciting and hopeful moment in the history of this church, as we live into a new name. Apostles are storytellers, and messengers, and sharers of good news. And I'm eager to see how we do all those things together- how we tell the stories of where we came from, and hold on to the brightest and strongest threads of both St. James and St. Matthias, and weave them together into something new.”
Outside the life of the Church, Reverend Miller is involved in Girl Guides, and is known as "Sweet Potato" to the 23rd Guelph Sparks. She states that “my own leadership abilities were nurtured and developed through Guiding, and I love the opportunity to help young girls learn to use their voice, literally. We do a lot of singing and shouting. The Sparks promise, to share and be a friend, lies close to the Gospel values that have shaped my life."
Church of the Apostles offers three different styles of church services on Sundays as well as a variety of other social and spiritual gatherings throughout the week. Church of the Apostles is also host to many events and gatherings both church focused and for general community enjoyment.
