The Goat

The Downtown Theatre Project (DTP) breaks new ground in its next live performance with a provocative play by renowned playwright Edward Albee (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?).

For Immediate Release -  July 10, 2019

The Goat, or Who is Silvia? is the controversial story of a famous architect who took a wrong turn on a country road one day. What happened next will change his family’s lives forever. First produced on Broadway in 2002, The Goat won the Tony and Drama Desk awards for best play and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

It’s an absurd mash-up of over-the-top comedy and breathless family tragedy, altogether onstage for five shows July 17 to 21 at The Making-Box in downtown Guelph.

“Albee shatters the boundaries of our taboos and offers us a glimpse of the beast within,” says director and co-producer Tim Clarke, who directed last season’s Bug for the DTP. “And then he makes us laugh in spite of ourselves.”

“It’s a beautifully written script with some challenging themes, so it calls for some very strong actors,“ says Clarke. “We have brought together the finest local talent and we’re pulling out all the stops for this one.”

The show stars veteran local actors Trevor Smith Diggins, Jen Barson and Carlo Adamo, with a breakout performance by 18-year-old Quaid Lale. Guelph artist Barbara Bryce painted the set for the show.

The Goat runs July 17-21 onstage for five shows at The Making Box, 43 Cork St. E. in Guelph. Limited seating.

Tickets are $25 at Eventbrite.ca
The play is rated 18+ for mature themes and language.

The DTP presents its sixth production in downtown Guelph with The Goat, on the heels of The Other Place in May and the sold-out comedy 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche in March. These local artists are taking theatre in new directions and smaller spaces, offering intimate live performances in downtown Guelph.
