U of Guelph Launches New Online Anti-Racism Training

Developed by U of G’s Office of Diversity and Human Rights (DHR), the module is called “Principles of Belonging: Anti-Oppression and Anti-Racism”

For Immediate Release: September 9, 2020

The University of Guelph is launching a new anti-oppression and anti-racism online training module for all students, faculty and staff.

Developed by U of G’s Office of Diversity and Human Rights (DHR), the module is called “Principles of Belonging: Anti-Oppression and Anti-Racism” and is now available on CourseLink.

The training provides core principles to foster more inclusive spaces and create an authentic sense of belonging for all campus community members.

“The Principles of Belonging module is an important step forward to assist students, faculty and staff in their anti-Black racism and anti-oppression education,” said Indira Naidoo-Harris, AVP (diversity and human rights). “It provides participants with the necessary tools to engage in anti-racism practices at U of G and beyond.”

Organized into two parts, the course will take participants about one hour to complete and is mandatory for new incoming students.

The first part covers principles of anti-oppression, which introduces equity and inclusion on campus and discusses four core anti-oppression principles that apply across a range of identity groups.

The second half addresses principles of anti-racism, enabling learners to explore how to engage in anti-racism and enact anti-racist practices on campus. It focuses on introducing key concepts such as systemic racism, power, privilege, allyship, microaggressions and cultural appropriation.

“This training module is part of the University’s ongoing commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion on our campuses and is a key component in creating a culture of respect and acceptance at U of G,” said Naidoo-Harris.
